I wanted a relaxed and calm day after spending a whirlwind long weekend in Denmark. Talk about good food, love of biking, and wonderful weather. It was THE place to be!
I set off for a forest/park close via the metro. I exited the metro entering a small mall with food and galore. I had to have a pastry for what would be my lunch. This bread looked good. What was it? I don’t know. Thinking it was chocolate, I finally decided. I received my bag, took out my pastry, and bit into it. What was it? Cabbage! Not chocolate! Cabbage! I laughed and laughed. I don’t think Russian will ever touch my heart and soul. Eating my morsel, which turned out to be good, I passed a local children’s festival. How did I know? They painted small cardboard homes with this pattern and that while their parents proudly photographed the momentous occasion. Even more so were the young ones in their vast learning stages of chess. One adult pretended he couldn’t do anything while the girl tried valiantly to beat him. I cheered her on! I pulled myself away for my walk.
Passing another church I continued until I faced the park’s/forest’s entrance. Dirt paths intertwined here and there. Birds chirped into the sky. Bicyclists zoomed past me eager for their next adventure. I felt sorry for the father who had to carry not only his bike up and down a deep ravine he also had to do so for his son. The son expected nothing less. My heart tugged to see the grandfathers gently pushing baby carriages along with a smile on his face.
I passed areas carved out of the forest for people to camp and picnic. I smelled to good food wishing for my turn for the barbeque. People were calm here. They weren’t rushed. They had to appointment to make. People simply wanted to enjoy nature. I can say I felt the calmest here than other Moscow parks. I can even say I almost forgot I was in Moscow…almost…especially when I saw a bicyclist passing me with his cigarettes tied securely to his bike. The dogs…oh the dogs. I passed a number of them off their leash. All of a sudden, I felt their noses sniffing my legs. I turned in surprise only to see their inquisitiveness shine through. Ok…fine…I let them sniff and meandered away. No harm done…No attack evident.
I passed the playground veering to the left. I took yet another path I thought would get me closer to the metro. Around 15 minutes later I sensed I was wrong. Luckily, I had my cell to guide me along the way. What would I have done otherwise; gone in circles I know. Finally I knew I neared the edge of the park when I heard dogs and yet more dogs barking. Yes, a dog obedience school but not the kind you might think of. The dog leaped at the man in his padded suit. It would not let go until its teacher yelled to let go. All the while, dogs barked and barked and barked. My ears burned. I can still hear the sounds.
I needed to move on to a nice park. Yet again, Moscovites abounded enjoying the wonderful weather! Then I walked to the marketplace only to feel as if I was in “silent land”. Vendors wilted in their chairs. The few customers searched for what they could not find only to discover they couldn’t find it. It felt like I was in Stephen King novel. I had to end it by leaving…searching for the metro…to my dinner. I hate to say it, but I went to TGI Friday. They are everywhere overseas. I have been holding off for over a year. It was time to taste American. I did with the ribs I wish were like those scrumptious ones in Kansas City with the milkshake I wish were like my father’s. Oh well, I had my small journey home.
